In 2009 I landed a role in Passport to Love, and then I did something my family thought was crazy. I left San Jose, the only home I knew, and moved to Vietnam with two hundred dollars and a suitcase. What came next was not the highlight reel. I bombed auditions. One casting director laughed out loud, in the room, while I was still performing. I felt like an outsider in both of my countries: too American for Vietnam, too Vietnamese for Hollywood. Then something shifted. I stopped trying to perform, and started paying attention to what was actually happening between people. And I realized acting was never about pretending, or reading lines, or being born with a gift. It is a craft. A trainable craft for presence, honesty, emotional truth, and human connection. The same craft that books the role can win the room, hold the pitch, and carry you through the hardest conversation of your life. I did not need more talent. I needed the method.
